SSAA Annual Exhibition 2010

Dundas Street Gallery, 6A Dundas Street, Edinburgh EH3 6HZ
12 to 17 April 2010

SSAA members exhibited 90 works in this excellent exhibition.  We were delighted that Kenneth Le Riche was able to attend and spend time ahead of the opening to assess the displays and make interesting comments on a number of members' works. He nominated Rob Moodie's "LSA3", a subtle, soft still life study, to receive the Donald Webster Award for Best Work, and Richard De'Ath's three landscapes of St Paul Lizonne, Dordogne, to receive the SSAA Award for Best Group.  In addition to the SSAA items, there were 3 mounted works from Germany, 4 from Poland and 5 from France, an interesting range of work, subjects and styles.

SSAA Winter Exhibition 2009/10

RIAS Gallery, 15 Rutland Square, Edinburgh EH1 2BE
10 December 2009 - 28 January 2010

This year, following changes to the layout of the reception area of the RIAS, the exhibition was held in the smaller Joyce B Deans Room which presented us with some challenges but produced an interesting result.  Members submitted works that were smaller, or used different techniques/media, filling the room 3 high, thereby accommodating as many as 64 entries.  Browsers were also introduced displaying 18 mounted prints of members' works.

SSAA Annual Exhibition 2009

Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum
Dunbarton Road, Stirling, FK8 2RQ
19 September to 6 December 2009

The SSAA Exhibition at the Stirling Smith Gallery included 6 magnificent works by Kenneth Le Riche, this year's Guest Artist, which created a vibrant end wall giving a strong focus for the exhibition. There were also 20 works by architect artists from Poland, Italy, Germany and France.  In total, there were 150 exhibits, filling Gallery II at the SAGM to capacity.  It also featured 5 items exhibited in memory of the late Jack Notman, a previous Chairman of the SSAA and an architect, interior designer, opera and theatre set and costume designer.

The Director of SAGM Elspeth King welcomed us after our President Richard Jaques had escorted Mrs Marjorie McLachlan, Lord Lieutenant of Stirling & Falkirk, around the gallery prior to her opening the exhibition.  The Donald Webster Award for the Best Work was presented to Allan Pendreigh for his 'Amsterdam', and the SSAA Award for the Best Group of Works to John Miller for 2 Screen Prints and 2 Indian Ink with Oil Wash and Watercolour.

The  SSAA  is very grateful for the use of this space and the excellent hanging of the exhibition by Sarah Fairclough, SAGM Exhibitions Curator, who also selected the awards.

SSAA 21st Anniversary Summer Exhibition

Dundas Street Gallery, 6A Dundas Street, EH3 6HZ

33 members exhibited 65 works and were accompanied by 3 prints from SARP-Poland.  The Guest Artist on this occasion was Avril Jacques, who exhibited 5 acrylic paintings and a remarkable landscape work 'Vue Aerienne' executed in handmade felt.  This provided an interesting range of sizes and colours and gave the exhibition an overall inviting appearance.

Margaret Webster and family had generously funded the 'Donald Webster Prize', in memory of her late husband, to be awarded for 'Best Work'.  This was presented to Hamish Haswell-Smith for his atmospheric oil painting 'Lothian Landscape', a much applauded first recipient of this prize.

The SSAA award for 'Best Group of Work' went to John Miller for 2 beautiful images in pencil, watercolour and oil wash, 'Arkengarthdale' and 'Crichton'.

Other paintings were sold by Alan Fiddes, Andrew Merrylees, Allan Pendreigh and Iain Webster.

SSAA Autumn Exhibition 2007

Dundas Street Gallery, 6A Dundas Street, Edinburgh EH3 6HZ
12 - 22 September 2007

This represented a landmark as it was the Society's 20th Annual Exhibition.  It was held in a new venue for the SSAA, the Dundas Street Gallery, although individual members have experience of exhibiting there, and it is located very much at the heart of the art gallery scene in Edinburgh.  Although it is housed in a semi-basement beneath Bourne Fine Art, it is very visible and proved to be a fine exhibition space with good lighting, and a pleasant ambience for the enjoyable private view on 11 September.  In another innovation, a second private view was held on 17 September, making it possible to rearrange some of the works where space had been restricted.

Usually the SSAA invites a Guest Artist to display work as a focus for the Annual Exhibition.  However, on this occasion, the exhibition included 6 paintings by Donald Webster, a distinguished founder member of the Society, who died last year.

There were also 17 works displayed by members of our European partner Societies in Paris, Stuttgart, Venice and Warsaw.

On 13 September, we were honoured with a visit by our Patron, HRH The Duke of Gloucester.  During a 45 minute tour of the exhibition, escorted by Richard Jaques, he was introduced to members of the committee and past presidents and partners, and he examined each of the works and spoke to artists present.  He was particularly taken with the painting of 'Sea-stacks of Macleod's Maidens' by Samantha Williams, and he subsequently purchased it.

The Award for 'Best Picture' went to John Doig for his oil painting of 'The Old Barn', and the Award for 'Best 2 Works' went to John Miller for his line drawings of 'Rogil' and 'Aljazur'.

39 members exhibited 71 works (+ 6 by Donald Webster and 17 from Europe).  Works were sold by Bob Anderson and Kate Sharp (2 each) and by Ian Davidson, John Doig, Jim Mackinnon, Derek McLean, Reseda Muir, Allan Pendreigh, Philip Spence, Samantha Williams and Bertram Zank.  Works were also sold by Petra Seibert (Stuttgart) and Stefan Steller (Warsaw).

In addition to the guests at the 2 private views, there were 350 visitors to the exhibition.

RIAS Gallery, 15 Rutland Square, Edinburgh EH1 2BE
7 December to 22 December 2005

This exhibition of 31 recent paintings and drawings from 30 artists, covering a wide range of subjects in a variety of media, was appropriately housed on this occasion in the small gallery contained within the headquarters of the architectural profession in Scotland, with whom the Society maintains close connections through the membership.  The preview coincided with the opening of the refurbished RIAS Bookshop which attracted a large number of guests who might not otherwise have visited the SSAA exhibition.

SSAA Autumn Exhibition 2005

Lloyds TSB Atrium, Henry Duncan House, 120 George Street, Edinburgh
28 September to 7 October 2005

This exhibition was held in the pleasant top-lit atrium of Henry Duncan House in George Street.  The work submitted was generally felt to be of a good standard with a variety of styles and media on display.  A total of 97 paintings were exhibited, including 10 from our European sister societies.

Also included were 8 paintings by our Guest Artist, Jenny Martin.  Originally from Dundee, she studied at the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art in the 1990s and now teaches at Leith School of Art.  She has exhibited mainly in Edinburgh and London, has won many prizes and has work in several prestigious collections, including the Royal Scottish Academy.

The Award winners were:  for Best Picture - Allan Pendreigh for his dramatic oil painting of The Bass Rock;  for Best Three Works - Stewart Hume for his bold and vibrant watercolours of Galloway.

Approximately 250 visitors were recorded over the 10 days of the exhibition.  The Society is pleased to acknowledge the generosity of Lloyds TSB in providing the exhibition venue.
